New and Popular Science Fiction and Fantasy

Here are science fiction and fantasy novels– some are old favorites and others are brand new. We’ve included the title and a brief little book description to catch your interest.

If you would like to borrow one of these books you can either send Ms. Mac an email, smcnerneyoe@olatheschools.org or place a hold online.

New Fantasy Books

Blazewrath Games

Set in an alternate contemporary world, dragons and their riders as they compete in an international sports tournament.

The Bone Houses

When risen corpses called ‘bone houses’ threaten Ryn’s village because of a decades-old curse, she teams up with a mapmaker named Ellis to solve the mystery of the curse and destroy the bone houses forever. Ms. Mac loves this unusual tale of mystery, action, suspense, loneliness, love— just all the emotions!

Catwoman

I must admit that Superhero stories aren’t always my favs, so I was a little skeptical of this one.  But Sarah J. Maas, one of my favorite authors, won me over.  This is the story of Catwoman, with some twists and clever character development you may not be expecting.   Plenty of action in Gotham, but also plenty of unexpected character alliances.  This one kept me up late as I raced to the finish.

Daughters of Jubilation

In the Jim Crow South, white supremacy reigns and tensions are high. But Evalene’s more worried about her mom, her younger sisters, and her emerging magical abilities–a gift passed down from generations of black women since the time of slavery. As Evvie’s talents waken, something dark comes loose and threatens to resurface… survival requires she summon the power that lies within her.

The Daughters of Ys– graphic novel

Drifting apart after their queen mother’s unexplained death, the sister princesses of an Atlantis-like city from Celtic legend find their bond irrevocably changed when their once-protected world becomes vulnerable to dangerous monsters.

Echo North

After her father disappears, Echo meets a wolf who promises to make sure her father is returned home safely if Echo agrees to live with the wolf in his enchanted house for one year.

The Grace Year

In what almost feels like a Puritan village, sixteen-year-old girls are banished to survive in the wilderness for a year.  While struggling to just survive they are also being brutally hunted.  Why?  Well to destroy the “magic” they hold which distracts and destroys men.  Survivors will return home to the “honor” of being selected as someone’s subservient husband.  Tiernay’s journey exposes even darker motivations than one might expect.  This is a grim story in the vein of The Handmaid’s Tale or Lord of the Flies.

The Infinite Noise

Caleb is an Atypical, an individual with enhanced abilities– he feels the emotions of everyone around him. Being an empath in high school would be hard enough, but Caleb’s life becomes even more complicated when he keeps getting pulled into the emotional orbit of one of his classmates, Adam.

The Kinder Poison

When her magical kingdom’s ailing ruler invokes an ancient tradition to identify his successor, a lowly stable girl who possesses the ability to commune with animals is chosen as a human sacrifice during a high-risk desert crossing involving three ruthless heirs.

The Kingdom of Back

Nannerl Mozart has just one wish–to be remembered forever. But she has little hope she’ll ever become the acclaimed composer she longs to be. As Nannerl’s hope grows dimmer with each passing year, the talents of her beloved younger brother, Wolfgang, only seem to shine brighter. His brilliance begins to eclipse her own, until one day a mysterious stranger from a magical land appears with an irresistible offer–but his help may cost her everything.

The Kingdom of Little Wounds

The wedding festivities of Scandinavian Princess Sophia are thrown into turmoil by an illness plaguing the royal family and a courtier’s plot that places a seamstress and a royal nursemaid at the center of an epic power struggle.  This one is dark, dark, dark.

Last Bus to Everlandblend of realistic and fantasy

Forging a bond with a compassionate artist, a youth in the projects joins a band of misfits and miscreants who meet weekly for adventures in a Narnia-inspired world, before dwindling magic forces him to choose between those he loves.

The Merciful Crow

Fie, a sixteen-year-old chieftain from a lowly caste of mercy-killers, must rely on her wits and bone magic to smuggle the crown prince of Sabor to safety.

Midasgraphic novel

Joey and her space crew have found the body of the legendary King Midas– and the legend is true. Everything that comes into contact with his flesh turns to gold, making it a very powerful weapon.

Now Entering Addamsville

Zora is framed for a crime she didn’t commit.  Will she be able to find the culprit and clear her name before it’s too late?

Penultimate Quest graphic novel

Far across the Western Ocean on a mist-shrouded island guarded by giant sea monsters, heroes come to explore the mysterious dungeons that lie below the surface. None have yet to reach the bottom and return to tell the tale. Each party gathers daily for a new round of potion-making, sword-sharpening, armor-buying, and dungeon-crawling, and after hours of leveling up in dangerous battles with monstrous creatures from the depths, they rest and try again the next day when everything repeats. That is, until one adventurer stops to ask why. Is it endlessly exciting, or simply endless?

Red Hoodblend of realistic and fantasy!

Since her grandmother became her caretaker when she was four years old, Bisou Martel has lived a quiet life in a little house in Seattle. She’s kept mostly to herself. She’s been good. But then comes the night of homecoming, when she finds herself running for her life over roots and between trees, a fury of claws and teeth behind her. A wolf attacks. Bisou fights back. A new moon rises. And with it, questions.

But Indi hopes that his parents’ journal with its tantalizing hints of a treasure will provide them all with an escape from their nomadic and dangerous life before it is too late.

Splinters of Scarlet

Stepsister

These Witches Don’t Burn

When evidence of dark magic begins to appear all over Salem, Massachusetts, Elemental Witch Hannah and her ex-girlfriend Veronica are forced to team up to stop the deadly attacks.

Aurora Cycle

Newly graduated Space Cadet Ty’s plans for interstellar military heroism are thrown off when he rescues a girl who has been drifting in cryosleep on a ship that’s been missing for 200 years.  Weird?  Yes.  And the war that’s about to start as a result?  Also odd.  Yup, things are going to get much worse before they get better (maybe?)  Tons of great sarcastic banter and (hopefully) death-defying action!  By the authors of the Illuminae Files trilogy (which Ms. Mac also loves).
